I think Saber Interactive's Evil Dead: The Game surprised us all. In fact, we even said it in our review (opens in new tab), noting that B-movie franchises are often the grist for quick, lazy cash grabs. But it turned out to be really good: "The game is absolutely exciting - one of the real left field sleepers of 2022," we declared, with an excellent score of 85% on it.
It was a nice surprise for sure, and here's another one: today's rollout of the free update that will send players to Castle Kandar, the setting for the cult classic zombie movie Army of Darkness.
Army of Darkness - ie the movie - is a lot of fun, although it didn't grip me in the same way as the first two Evil Dead movies. It moved away from the "bucket-of-blood" approach that those films embodied, instead embracing more openly the inherent craziness of the whole. Sometimes it worked - "This is my boomstick (opens in new tab)became an instantly recognizable one-liner for a reason — and at times it was just clunky and too long. However, the larger cast and premise seem like a more natural fit for a video game redo, if only because there's a lot more to see. than just a cabin and a car.
Speaking of which, other locations from the movie that players can visit on the new map include the Windmill, the Arthurian Outpost, Fort Gort, and the Castle Kandar Tower. To aid in sightseeing, the update also adds a new single-player exploration mode, which opens up all maps in the game for free-roaming solo play, although you'll still have to deal with the Deadites on your travels.
The update will add two new weapons, the slow, skull-crushing Mace and the Explosive Crossbow, and of course there will be a number of new cosmetics for sale, including Ash's S-Mart (opens in new tab) outfit and a collection of new looks for Lord Arthur and Henry the Red.
Evil Dead: The Game is available on PC at the Epic Games Store (opens in new tab) for $40.
