Amazon Prime Day graphics card deals are no longer a hopeless dream. They are a very real reality. It's a sign of the decline of the ethereum-based GPU mining boom, and the waning of the graphics card shortage and supply chain nightmare that has been the backdrop to PC gaming in recent years.
On the other hand, it also shows that we are rapidly approaching a new generation of computer hardware; especially: graphics cards. It means retailers are eager to ship stock of the current generation of GPUs because they won't be able to charge that much once new hardware rolls off the line.
All this leaves us a little confused - while there are currently big discounts on graphics cards and other Prime Day PC gaming deals (opens in new tab), they are discounts on prices that are too high. We also see the biggest savings on the more expensive GPUs, such as the GeForce RTX 3090 and Radeon RX 6900 XT, which will be the first to be replaced at the start of the new silicon era.
You could easily save $200 on an RTX 3090, maybe even below its MSRP, but considering the upcoming ~$600 RTX 4070 will likely outperform, that's not a purchase we'd necessarily recommend. Not unless you For real need a new high end graphics card now.
Still, the start of a new-generation supply is always tight, so it can be difficult to grab a next-gen GPU at launch. However, there is almost always new technology around the corner, so sometimes you just have to say 'screw it!' and press the buy button.
If you can find a good price for something like an RTX 3070 or lower, then you're doing it right, because AMD's mid-range or Nvidia's new stack of graphics cards won't see the light of day until well into the next year.

GPU benchmarks
Each new GPU generation offers new features and capabilities. But gridded rendering is still the most important measure of overall gaming performance in the PC gaming world. Sure, Nvidia GPUs may be better at the ray tracing benchmarks they more or less initiated, but when it comes to basic gaming performance, AMD's latest lineup can certainly keep up.
It's also worth noting that the previous generation of graphics cards still have something to offer, with something like the GTX 1650 Super being able to outperform a more modern RTX 3050 in most benchmarks.
We're not saying you should buy an older card in 2022, but it's worth knowing where your current GPU stacks up, or just knowing the country lie. But there's also the fact that gaming rigs with older graphics cards will be on sale in the coming days, and if they're cheap enough, they might still be worth checking out as cheap entry into PC gaming.
